How To Perform Aromatherapy At Home

The Oils You Can Choose From
Cardamom
One of my very favorite cooking spices is also a warm, stimulating, and even pain relieving oil.
Cypress
Tones the skin, cleanses and balances oiliness.
Geranium
Is skin hydrating, soothing to irritation and nourishing.
Grapefruit
Refreshing and energizing, this oil has cleansing, detoxifying and oil-balancing properties.
Juniper
This oil has stimulating, warming and detoxifying properties. It’s excellent for use on areas of the body prone to cellulite.
Lavender
Known the world over for its calming affect, this oil is also soothing, rejuvenating and even pain relieving. Lavender can help reduce if applied to recent cuts and scrapes.
Lemon
This tart-sweet citrus oil has antiseptic, toning and cleansing properties.
Ylang Ylang
Another lovely fragrance that is especially beneficial to oily skin, Ylang Ylang reduces oil while maintaining moisture balance, and rejuvenates the spirit.

Methods
To make a blend: Take a small, clean glass or china bowl, and measure 4 teaspoons of a carrier oil, such as jojoba, into it. Add your essential oil one drop at a time, per your particular recipe, and blend well. You should use this mixture right away.

For baths: Run the bath to a comfortable temperature, and add drops of your essential oil of choice to a carrier, such as milk. Swish the mixture around in the water right before you get in.

Facial steaming: Pour near-boiling water into a heatproof glass bowl so that it stands two-thirds full. Add drops of your essential oil of choice. Lean over the bowl, and cover your head with a towel so that the steam reaches your entire face and neck. If you can, move forward over the bowl so that the decollete area is also steamed; moving back after a few seconds. Move forward in that manner every minute or so, and set your steam time to 15 minutes.

Storing Essential Oils
Once you open bottles of essential oils, they will keep up to one year with the exception of citrus oils which will only remain potent for 6 months. Keep them in a dark, cool, place. Make a list of them, noting the dates opened. Do not refrigerate.

Experiment With Blends
Begin with two ounces of a carrier oil, such as jojoba, and try adding three to six drops of any one of the essential oils listed above. You can mix them as well, staying with the same quantity of essential oils. A favorite of mine is three drops of lavender and three drops of lemon.
It’s important to know your skin type and tolerances before you use any essential oils, whether at home or in a spa.
Enjoy this relaxing experience!
